Our Story Started With One Broken Phone
The story of Fix My Gadget began in 2007 with a cracked flip phone.
One early morning, a Nextel phone was accidentally stepped on after being left open in a pair of jeans on the floor. The LCD was cracked, but the phone still worked. The answer from the outside world was simple: replace it.
The replacement cost was around $300.
That did not sit right.
If the screen was the only thing broken, why throw away the whole phone? Why should a working device be replaced just because one part failed?
So the search began. Repair videos, parts, tools, trial and error, and a lot of curiosity turned that broken phone into the first successful repair.
It took several hours and cost about $50.
It would have been faster to replace the phone, but fixing it revealed something bigger: people needed a better option.
At the time, broken phones were everywhere. Friends, coworkers, customers, and business owners were walking around with cracked screens and damaged devices because they thought repair was impossible, too expensive, or not worth the trouble.
That first repair proved otherwise.
From a Kitchen Table to a Local Repair Shop
What started as one repair quickly became a small side business.
A simple website was built offering local and mail-in cell phone repairs before the iPhone had even changed the world. Within a week, broken phones started arriving from around the country. Devices were repaired, packed up, and mailed back to customers who were relieved to have a working phone again.
Soon, local customers, friends, families, and businesses began spreading the word.
One repair became several. Several became ten or fifteen devices a day. The more people found out that their devices could be fixed, the more the business grew.
By 2011, smartphones had changed everything. iPhones, Samsung phones, and other devices became essential parts of daily life, and demand for reliable repair exploded.
In 2013, Fix My Gadget expanded beyond phones and began repairing Apple computers as well. That decision helped turn a small repair operation into a full-service local repair business.
Since then, Fix My Gadget has grown from one person repairing devices at home into a Main Street retail storefront serving the community with hundreds of repairs every month.
Today, we have completed more than 285,000 repairs and counting.
But the mission is still the same as it was with that first broken phone:
Help people fix what matters instead of replacing it too soon.
